OUR STORY

Built in the
produce aisle

Xpired started with a simple observation: grocery stores throw away edible food every year. We're here to change that.

Our Mission

We believe food surplus deserves better tools. ReFED reports $380 billion in U.S. surplus food in 2024, of which $325 billion was wasted.

Our mission is to help households and stores keep better track of the food they already have. The current beta starts with manual grocery entry and use-by planning.

Environmental Impact

Food waste consumes resources and contributes to emissions; the impact varies by food and disposal path.

Economic Impact

Retailer shrink and waste vary by store. Any Xpired pilot would establish a customer-approved baseline before evaluating impact.

Social Impact

Food insecurity and food waste coexist. Xpired does not claim that its current beta has measured either outcome.

OUR JOURNEY

From aisle to AI

2022

The Produce Floor

Lawrence Hua spent 4 months working as a Produce Team Leader at a regional grocery chain, conducting studies on shrink, quality assessment, and shelf-life estimation using computer vision.

2023

The Pivot

Enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University to study AI and machine learning. Realized computer vision could solve the waste problem.

2024

Building the AI

Built separate produce-identification and freshness model candidates, with task-specific evaluations kept distinct from deployment proof.

2025-2026

Validation & Growth

Continued task-specific model evaluation and released an iOS shopper beta on TestFlight. Scanner availability, coverage, and deployed accuracy remain build-bound.

Founder & CEO

Lawrence combines hands-on grocery operations experience with AI/ML development. After working the produce floor at a regional grocer, he pursued studies at Carnegie Mellon University and developed candidate model workflows for Xpired. VALUES

What drives us

Operator-Led

We build what actually works on the floor, not what looks good in a boardroom.

Scientific Rigor

Candidate model work must use rights-cleared, independently reviewed data and pass build-bound evaluation before any public accuracy claim.

Partnership First

We succeed when our customers succeed. We're a partner, not just a vendor.

Proudly Built in Pittsburgh

Xpired was founded and is being developed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This does not imply a staffed public headquarters or visitor office.
